Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania Old Formula In New Clothes Movie Review

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania  Old Formula In New Clothes Movie Review

Alia Bhatt’s Kavya Singh is not too different from Ananya from 2 States – a spunky, spoilt, obstinate girl who wants to marry, not the man her parents have chosen for her, but the man of her choosing. However it is up to the said boy to win over the trust and consent of her hardheaded father (Ashutosh Rana) who is nursing old wounds.

In this case Rakesh Sharma, aka Humpty from Delhi, the only son of a bookshop owner, must win over Kavya’s hotheaded, chauvinistic Punjabi family from Ambala. Humpty and Kavya’s chance meeting happens in Delhi where she has arrived to buy her designer wedding lehenga. Like many modern romcoms, there is no substance to this love story – he sees her dancing at a party in western wear and selling her gold earrings and love happens. He saves her friend from humilation and she’s putty in his hands. A kiss and cut to a scene of bare shoulders, a bare torso and the morning after. But she will not hurt her already hurting father, who has never recovered from seeing one daughter’s love marriage end badly, and returns to Ambala leaving Humpty behind.

Now Humpty shows up at the wedding house. Papa Singh gives him five days to prove that Kavya’s betrothed Angad (Siddharth Shukla) is not good enough for her. Turns out, he’s perfect, making Humpty’s task all the more challenging. But ultimately a hot-headed Punjabi man finds that one cut from the same cloth – and not the educated, sensitive, pacifist – is best for his daughter. Love, as numerous Bollywood movies have proven, conquers all, especially when the climax takes place at a train station.

Director Shashank Khaitan is of that generation that is so influenced by Raj and Simran’s love story in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge that references to the film abound in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. In the context of contemporary India, it means that designer lehengas and Maruti cars define Kavya and Humpty’s aspirations. This is the shallow world of Khaitan’s film with formulaic good- hearted grandmothers and understanding mothers, two do-or-die best friends, a doting single parent, and wedding songs and dances.

Where Khaitan scores is in the dialogues, which are natural, funny, snappy and delivered smoothly by the actors. Alia Bhatt is clearly a star – she is the whole package, even if her dancing is a bit weak. Let’s hope she doesn’t get stuck playing the same role in all her films – of the one-dimensional young girl who knows she will get what she wants. Humpty is also written as a vehicle to show off Varun Dhawan’s appeal – his dancing and his connect with teenaged girls. If only he would not sound tapori even when he is playing a Dilli boy.

As the devoted friends Poplu (Sahil Vaid) and Shonty (Gaurav Pandey) add a layer that the film is otherwise deeply lacking. But then complexity and maturity are not part of the formula of contemporary teenage love stories.

Indian seam scuttles England

Indian seam scuttles England

It was just like the second day. England's batsmen dominated the first session, India's bowlers took a clump of wickets in the second session, and England's lower order frustrated the bowlers after tea. India were on the verge of taking a massive lead and possibly bowling England out short of the follow-on mark before Joe Root averted the danger along with the lower order to end the day unbeaten on 78. Root put on 78 with Stuart Broad, and an unbroken 54 with No. 11 James Anderson as England ended the day trailing by 105.

His best spell in recent memory: Ishant SharmaThe pitch remained slow and unresponsive through the third day, but India's seamers got more out of it by bowling a much straighter line. Where India's batsmen defended 288 balls from England's seamers and left 257 balls alone, England's batsmen, by stumps, had defended 175 balls and only left 87 alone. It took until the 33rd over of the day, and the second over of the post-lunch session, for India to taste any success.
It came from Ishant Sharma, who got the ball to duck back in from a good length to make Robson pay for staying stuck in his crease. The ball hit his front pad before cannoning onto his back pad and umpire Bruce Oxenford had little hesitation in giving him out, even if Hotspot picked up what might have been a faint inside edge.

The umpires changed the ball two overs later, after it looked to have gone out of shape. And the replacement, much to India's delight, showed itself far more responsive to the clouds that had gathered overhead, after two clear days. Ishant immediately got it to curl late into the left-handed Gary Ballance and ping him on the front pad - this time, there was absolutely no doubt about the decision. Only two Indian batsmen had been dismissed bowled or lbw. All of England's top three had been dismissed with no help from fielders.
Ian Bell caressed his way to 25 before he fell victim to indecision, bottom-edging Ishant to the keeper while trying to withdraw his bat from a short, rising ball outside off. Indifferent bounce consumed Moeen Ali ten overs later, when he took his eyes of a Mohammed Shami bouncer that didn't quite rise as expected and ended up gloving the ball to slip.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar came to the party with ten minutes to go for tea, swinging the ball away from the right-handed Matt Prior and then the left-handed Ben Stokes to have both caught behind. Prior had reason to feel aggrieved by his dismissal, with replays showing a fair sliver of daylight between ball and outside edge.
After tea, Broad went after the bowling, driving and slashing on the up through the off side. Despite the old ball doing a bit, India took the new ball two overs after it was due, and the runs came even quicker, Broad striking five fours in the first two new-ball overs. The mood rubbed off on Root as well, and he got in an uncharacteristically big front-foot stride to drive Bhuvneshwar sweetly through the off side.

Just when the partnership was assuming dangerous proportions, Bhuvneshwar got one to straighten from leg stump and hit Broad's front pad in front of leg stump. He had his fourth wicket seven overs later, when he nipped one back to bowl Liam Plunkett.
India still had Anderson to get past, though. In his last Test match against Sri Lanka, he had blocked out 54 balls before being dismissed two balls short of saving the match and the series. Here, he came out with a different approach. Root initially farmed the strike, placing the ball adroitly into the outfield to take the singles that India gifted him with their deep fields.

Given the strike, Anderson went for his shots, punching Bhuvneshwar through the covers, reverse-sweeping Jadeja, and only looking uncomfortable when the fast bowlers dug it in. Root and Anderson batted for 14.3 overs, and could yet overhaul the 111 runs that Bhuvneshwar and Shami, India's last-wicket pair, had put on on the second day.
In the morning session, Robson and Ballance had looked largely untroubled, and had seemed by lunch to have won the contest of patience against India's seamers. Ballance took guard outside the crease to negate the effect of his extravagant back-and-across trigger movement and get relatively close to the pitch of the ball when the bowlers drew him forward. Robson got nicely on top of the ball when he defended off the front foot, and even Bhuvneshwar's inswing, by and large, didn't cause his head to fall over.

The only chance in the session came when Robson, on 43, inside-edged Ravindra Jadeja as he tried to work the ball around the corner. Virat Kohli dived to his left from leg slip and got his fingers under the ball but couldn't hold on.
The bowlers lost some of their discipline late in the session, and Ballance capitalised to beat Robson to fifty. There had been no fours for 12 overs before Ballance took three off one Ishant over, two clipped off his legs and one slapped past backward point.

Stuart Binny, who replaced Ishant from that end, released a little more of the pressure, leaking four boundaries in his first three overs, and both batsmen reached their 50s with steered fours down to third man off him. Binny didn't bowl in the second session, and only sent down one over after tea, and with Jadeja threatening to play a bigger role in England's second innings, India may come to wonder if they should have gone with an extra spinner.

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe Z51 Manual

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe Z51 Manual

Months in Fleet: 3 months
Current Mileage: 5,911 miles
Average Fuel Economy: 19 mpg
Range: 350 miles
Service: $0
Normal Wear: $0
Repair: $0
Damage and Destruction: $0

With the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette’s seventh-gen make over one of the boldest in the nameplate’s historyalong with the C7 Stingray’s awesome track performance, multiple comparison-test wins, and 2014 10Best Cars nod—the calls around the C/D HQ for a long-term study were loud and persistent.
General Motors answered our pleas and dropped off this 2014 Blade Silver Metallic coupe, complete with our own personalized plaque on the console, for a 40,000-mile evaluation. Not wanting to stuff it into a late-season snow bank before we could unleash the new Gen V LT1 small-block V-8, we immediately fitted a set of Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 winter tires, which facilitated the completion of a proper break-in despite the slush.

Heavy Artillery
Even in base 1LT trim, the $53,995 2014 Stingray comes well-equipped, packing a carbon-fiber hood and removable roof panel, an eight-inch touch-screen in the center stack, another eight-inch display—this one for driver information—in the cluster, supportive sport seats, advanced stability control, a seven-speed manual gearbox, and much, much more. (You can read a full rundown of the Stingray’s basics here.) Our example went a step beyond with the $4210 2LT package and its heated and ventilated seats, head-up color display, 10-speaker Bose stereo, auto-dimming mirrors, Corvette logos on the seats, and color-keyed console and door trim.

We want to exploit the full potential of the C7, so we opted for the Z51 performance model ($57,995 base), which adds more aggressive suspension tuning, an electronic limited-slip diff, closer-spaced gear ratios, larger slotted brake rotors, 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels, aero tweaks for improved high-speed stability, and dry-sump oiling for the 455-hp 6.2-liter V-8.

To reach full-attack mode, we also specified the new Competition seats with additional bolstering ($1995), Magnetic Ride Control with Chevy’s Performance Traction Management system ($1795), and the dual-mode exhaust ($1195), which gives the LT1 a menacing roar while boosting output to 460 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. Other bits contributing to the $66,575 as-tested figure include carbon-fiber interior trim ($995), MyLink navigation ($795), black painted wheels ($495), the personalized ID plaque ($200), and the spoiler and mirrors painted in “carbon flash”($100).

Although $67K pushes our test car beyond bargain-shopper territory, the Corvette is loaded with technology
and is fantastic while blasting down back roads or just cruising the boulevards. The color scheme adds a smidge of modesty to the jet-fighter exterior shape, while the overall cockpit feel is more intimate and welcoming than was the C6’s. The C7 is a driver’s car through and through.

Our initial track data assuaged the sticker shock even further, with the 3436-pound Z51 dashing to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 12.2 at 118 mph, its quad tailpipes snarling madly up to its drag-limited 181-mph top speed. With the run-flat Michelin Pilot Super Sports—sized 245/35 in front and 285/30 in back—lending flypaper-like grip, the car clung to the skidpad to the tune of 1.03 g and tried to detach our retinas with a fade-free 137-foot stop from 70 mph, one of the best performances we’ve ever recorded.

 The Real World Cometh

Despite the tall seventh gear and EPA ratings of 17 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway, our initial exuberance for the direct-injected small-block V-8 has limited our observed fuel economy to just 19 mpg. Part of that is also due to the car staying relatively close to home thus far, its most distant journey being a quick jaunt to Virginia International Raceway in support of our annual Lightning Lap event. Initial logbook comments have praised the C7’s overall driving experience and the old-school forward view of the front fenders rising above the long, vented hood. Although some drivers have chided the manual shifter as being too notchy and the engine’s idle as too lumpy, others find them to be part of the ’Vette’s muscular charm. The new seats are vastly more supportive than the flimsier chairs of previous Corvettes, yet some drivers are still coming to terms with the firm, movement-restricting design.

Our car has yet to receive its first scheduled service (due at 7500 miles), but we’ve already had to visit the dealer for the central infotainment screen, which would occasionally flash wildly between menus and freeze up entirely. It turned out that carbon trim on the dash was in contact with the touch-screen: the dealer easily fixed the issue by shimming the trim away from the display. Our Stingray also has been flagged by one of GM's many recent recalls, specifically for the side-impact airbag modules in the optional competition seats, which may not deploy in the event of an accident. As of this writing, new airbag modules are on order at our local dealer and will be installed under warranty. GM is instructing owners of affected Corvettes to keep small children from riding in the car until the modules have been replaced.

The new Stingray is arguably the best Corvette in history. While we can already say the new car has effectively addressed our main qualms with the C6—namely, the poor seats and interior materials, and a lack of tactility when driving below the car’s limits—the remaining 34,000 miles in our C7 test will reveal how well GM has adapted its American icon for the modern age

Nalanum Nandhiniyum KollyWood Movie ReView 2014

Nalanum Nandhiniyum KollyWood Movie Review 2014

Synopsis: Young lovers defy their families, which are at odds with each other, and get married and migrate to the city. With no jobs and no one to support them, will there be a happily ever after?

Review: Duraipandi and Arunachalam have a history but Dhanam, Duraipandi's sister, wants her son Nalan to marry Nandhini, Arunachalam's daughter. However, the enmity between the two men worsens. Meanwhile, Nalan and Nandhini, who have grown having feelings for each other get married. The two families refuse to accept them and the newlyweds relocate to Chennai. Can they make it big in the city? Will they bring their two families together?

With a debut work, we expect some amount of freshness, be it in the idea or in presentation. But for his first film, Venkatesan takes up plots that Tamil audiences are very much used to. The film is split into two segments, with the interval being the median. In the first half, we are introduced to the characters in Duraipandi and Arunachalam's household and through the title song, the director establishes the characteristics and equations between these characters. But rather than dive straight into the story, Venkatesan gives us almost an hour of needless padding in the form of listless comedy by Soori and Rinson. There is romance as well, but a very much watered down new-age rural romance.

Thankfully, something happens at last when Duraipandi and Arunachalam have a public fallout and the director cranks up the tension by getting Nalan and Nandhini married. And, only then, Venkatesan reveals his true intentions — the film is not really about the two older men but about Nalanum Nandhiniyum! The second half, set in Chennai, turns into a wish fulfillment fantasy — the story of a couple who struggle for a bit in the city before striking it rich. The film is content to coast on feel good moments and melodrama bordering on implausibility. Nalan is a carefree young man and the onus of running the family falls on Nandhini, who takes up the job of a teacher. He whiles away the time while she works but once she becomes pregnant, he discovers responsibility just like that! And, what better place can make your problems vanish overnight than the film industry? So, we get a sub-plot about Nalan trying (and of course, succeeding) to become a director. This also provides the director to pay his respects to his guru — Venkat Prabhu.

Nalanum Nandhiniyum isn't a bad film per se but it is definitely an indifferent one. If the first half suffers from the serial-like treatment, you could dub the second half portions as Vikraman lite (Nalan even narrates a story about four friends, Vikraman's familiar trope, to a director). At times, the film seems to be somewhat autobiographical and given that first-time filmmakers often tend to put incidents from their lives into their films, you cannot discount the notion. What lets the film down, apart from the simplistic writing (Nandhini, for example, isn't really bothered that Nalan is living off her), is that there are hardly any challenges and even when there is sign of a likely struggle (like, when both Nalan and Nandhini are jobless after her pregnancy), it is brushed away with easy resolutions.

Modi Hopes Obama Invite will Energise Ties

Modi Hopes Obama Invite will Energise Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday accepted the formal invitation from U.S. President Barack Obama that was delivered by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns. After meeting Mr. Burns in Delhi, the Prime Minister's Office issued a statement saying he “thanked President Obama for the invitation and looked forward to a result-oriented visit with concrete outcomes that imparts new momentum and energy to India-U.S. strategic partnership”.
Mr. Modi is likely to meet President Obama on September 30 after his visit to the U.N. General Assembly in New York, where a number of crucial bilateral meetings are also expected. By inviting Mr. Modi, the U.S. has made an exception to its rule of avoiding bilateral meetings in Washington while the General Assembly is in session. This is a far cry from its policy until recently of having revoked Mr. Modi’s visa over the Gujarat riots.
Preparatory meetings for the summit are already under way, with a slew of senior officials expected in Delhi following Mr. Burns’ visit. On Saturday, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce Arun Kumar will lead an economic delegation to India., visiting Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad to discuss “growing the U.S.-India commercial relationship,” a U.S. Embassy release said. Secretary of State John Kerry is expected on July 31, followed closely by U.S. Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel in the second week of August. The non-resident Indian community is expected to accord Mr. Modi a grand welcome in New York, according to PTI

Under attack over rising prices, Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said on Monday that a one-month-old government which is yet to take policy decisions cannot be held responsible for price rise.
With the Budget Session starting on stormy note due to disruptions by Opposition on the issue of price rise and rail fare hike, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister said the government was ready to discuss all issues including price rise but under appropriate rules.
“You cannot make a one-month government responsible for all this price hike and all. We have not taken any new policy decision. ...You have the problem of monsoon, you have the problem of the wrong economic policies of the earlier government,” Mr. Naidu told reporters outside the Parliament here.
Claiming that the government was playing a proactive role to bring down the prices, Mr. Naidu said the Minister of Consumer Affairs had called a meeting which was attended by the Finance Minister as well.
He said the Home Ministry has taken an initiative by ordering a massive crackdown against hoarding of essential commodities including onion and potatoes in Delhi and has also given instructions to other states about what should be done.
On Opposition’s demand for a discussion on the issues of price rise of rail fare hike under an adjournment motion, Naidu said the government is ready to discuss everything, including price rise, depending on the rule and also admissibility of the same by the presiding officer.
“In the Rajya Sabha we said we are ready for discussion, discussion started.... In Lok Sabha also, I stood up and said government is ready for discussion, what rules and all, that is the jurisdiction of the presiding officer of the House.”
“Now as the question hour time is over, we should take it up immediately. Congress should be ready for debate, I don’t know why they are hesitating,” he said.
On a question related to statements by Congress leaders that the party may take the legal route if it is not given the position of Leader of Opposition, Mr. Naidu said “the Constitution is there and every route is open to everybody

KCR lays out plans For Telangana Development

KCR lays out plans For Telangana Development

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao today stressed on a "bottoms-up" approach of planning in Telangana State and said he was in no hurry to show visible development for another one or two months.
At a meeting with a large number of officials from every district at the MCR-HRD Institute here on Monday, Mr. Rao said he aimed at a development strategy that was in the context of Telangana State and tuned to its needs. The administration of the State which was in the context of a combined State till recently will be "reinvented and reoriented" in the changed circumstances.
In his two and a half hour long speech, Mr. Rao set out his priorities in various sectors, including irrigation, power and welfare, where he identified several lapses in the combined State.
In irrigation, he said Telangana suffered badly as it lost about 200 tmc ft water storage in minor irrigation sector due to destruction of tanks. A storage of 265 tmc ft in the tanks was guaranteed by Bachawat tribunal in Krishna and Godavari basins but the availability now was only 65 tmc ft. He asked irrigation officials to rejuvenate all the tanks on a war footing.
The Itchampally project across Godavari in Karimnagar district will be constructed and the inter-State project on Lower Penganga taken up with Maharashtra, he added.
Mr. Rao said the government was committed to the crop loan waiver over which the Cabinet will take a view in its next meeting. The Collectors will be asked to unearth scams in housing which were deep rooted. A random survey in 593 villages detected misuse of Rs. 235 crore with records being cooked up to show sanction of houses but no beneficiaries.
The Chief Minister announced the expansion of his Cabinet by month end and the setting up of a State Advisory Council with experts from various walks of life to aid and guide the government. He also said there will be no acquisition of land for special economic zones as 2.20 lakh acres available with the government will be used for industrialisation.
Mr. Rao came down heavily on illegal constructions in Hyderabad and said the government had identified 58,000 of them recently. All of them will be regulated. In addition to the international airport at Shamshabad, he said the city will have two more at Shamirpet and Ghatkesar. He asked officials to stop reclaiming land on the banks of Tank Bund and Musi.

Tempestuous start To Budget session

Tempestuous start To Budget session

The Budget Session of the Lok Sabha started on a tempestuous note on Monday with members belonging to several Opposition parties storming the Well of the House protesting against inflation and hike in rail fares and prices of petrol, diesel and LPG.
Trouble started as soon as the Question Hour began, with members of the Congress, Trinamool Congress, RJD, SP, Aam Aadmi Party and the Left trooping into the Well raising the issue of prices and rail fare hike.
Speaker Sumitra Mahajan’s repeated pleas to allow the questions to be taken up went unheeded, leading to adjournment of the House for nearly 40 minutes.
Monday was the first day of the Budget session of the new Narendra Modi Government.
Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) members were also in the Well opposing the ordinance on the Polavaram project.
Slogans like “achha din ayega, mahangai badhayega (good days will come, prices will rise)” and ‘roll back rail fare hike’ were heard. Members also opposed rise in prices of petrol, diesel and LPG.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was seen standing in the aisle, while his party colleagues Jyotiraditya Scindia, Deepinder Singh Hooda, K C Venugopal and several others were in the Well.
RJD’s Pappu Yadav was vociferous in his protest as was TMC’s Kalyan Banerjee and most of his party colleagues.
Bhagwant Singh Mann of AAP was also in the Well and was heard raising the plight of Indians left behind in trouble—torn Iraq.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in the House during the entire period of turmoil along with his senior party and Ministerial colleagues L K Advani, Rajnath Singh and Sushma Swaraj.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi was also seated in the front row of the Opposition benches.
Amidst the din, the replies to questions given by Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Labour Minister Narendra Singh Tomar could not be heard.
NCP’s Supriya Sule, who was asked to raise a question on unemployment, shouted that the government’s reply was “unsatisfactory and bureaucratic

Arima Nambi Tamil Movie Review

Arima Nambi Tamil Movie Review

Cast: Vikram Prabhu, Priya Anand, JD Chakravarthy, Lekha Washington, MS Bhaskar
Direction: Anand Shankar
Genre: Thriller
Duration: 2 hours 31 minutes

Synopsis: When Anamika, the girl who he is on a date with, is kidnapped, Arjun goes to the police for help and gets into a dangerous situation from where there is no escape.

Movie Review: Arima Nambi opens with a conversation in a high-end restaurant where we see Arjun Krishna (Vikram Prabhu in a role that is not so different from the one in Ivan Vera Mathiri) and his friends rating girls. 'Oh no, not again,' you cringe and fear what the rest of the film will be like. But then, we get a very nice meet-cute. Arjun sees Anamika ( Priya Anand, just adequate), a confident young girl, in the crowd and approaches her. He woos her with a song, gets her contact and a day later, the two are off on a date — drinking and talking to their hearts' content. Anamika invites Arjun to her home for a drink and everything seems cozy (it is refreshing to see a film that doesn't make a fuss over its leads drinking). And then, Anamika is kidnapped, and her kidnappers mean business. When Arjun tries to go after them, they don't think twice about shooting at him.

All these events happen in the first 20 minutes of the film and that is when you realize that you are in the hands of a confident filmmaker. First-time director Anand Shankar packs in enough background about the two characters so that we care about them. We get why Arjun, who has known Anamika only for two days, will risk his life to save her.

The first half of the film is first rate. There is a genuine thrill in these portions that keeps us on the edge of our seats. This is also when the film feels most plausible. When Arumugham, a cop who takes up the case, saves Arjun when he is about to be shot, it doesn't seem unlikely. He is a thinking cop and MS Bhaskar plays this role in a wonderful manner; we can see the wheels in his mind turning as he goes through the details of the case. Like, when Arjun tells him the details of the car in which Anamika has been kidnapped, he pauses for a beat to process the information and only then calls the control room. Similarly, when Arjun takes on his pursuers for the first time, we are not surprised as we have seen him working out at the gym in a lighter scene. What seemed like a hero-glorification shot earlier (a close-up shot of Arjun's abs) now has context.

There is a fair bit of exposition that feels unneeded. In one scene, Arjun and Arumugan are eavesdropping on the conversation between the villains and Anamika's dad and we get why the kidnap has taken place. Yet, the director makes Arjun explain this to Arumugham, who, we know, is an intelligent cop. Such spoon-feeding should not have been there in a film that is smart enough to know what it wants to be.

The plot, in fact, is all-too familiar and resembles K Bhagyaraj's 1991 comedy thriller Rudhra the most. As in that film, here, too, there is a video of a murder that the villain, a powerful politician, wants to destroy. Both the heroines are damsels in distresses requiring the help of a hero with a presence of mind. There is even a scene of the hero committing a bank robbery (though, they are tonally very different). There are cops who are in collusion with the villain. The all-important video gets destroyed in both films. Finally, even the manner in which the hero indicts the villain is similar. However, the treatment is very Hollywoodish here.

There are scenes which show that Anand Shankar is merely taking a leaf out of Hollywood thrillers. At least two sequences in the second half — a rooftop chase sequence (adapted very well) and events at a police control room (adapted a little clumsily) — are influenced by The Bourne Ultimatum. 'Why am I not getting this?' asks a character, repeating a line from the earlier film. Even a musical cue that crops up at crucial moments resembles what is known as the 'Hans Zimmer horn' sound.

The film also loses some of its verve in the second half, which feels a little stretched and all over the place. And, yet, there is enough cleverness in the writing and assuredness in the execution, especially for a debut film, to make Arima Nambi stand apart from your usual action thrillers.

Ra Ra Krishnayya Telugu Movie Review

Ra Ra Krishnayya Telugu Movie Review

Cast: Sundeep Kishan, Regina Cassandra, Jagapathi Babu, Tanikella Bharani, Brahmaji, Thagubothu Ramesh, Satyam Rajesh
Direction: Mahesh P
Genre: Comedy
Duration: 2 hours 19 minutes

Story: Krishna (Sundeep) is an ambitious cab driver who hopes to start his own taxi service someday. He saves his money with his boss Manikyam (Tanikella Bharani), who refuses to return Krishna his 6 lakhs. A drunk Krishna gate-crashes Manikyam's daughter, Nandu's (Regina) wedding and kidnaps her.

Movie Review: This movie is what they call a 'freemake' or an "unofficial remake" in Telugu cinema jargon. For the uninitiated, the above mentioned terms are used to describe films that are remakes of other films without explicitly stating to be...well, a remake. So going by the aforementioned rationale, this film is a 'freemake' of the Riteish Deshmukh - Genelia-starrer Tere Naal Love Hogaya.
The premise is simple. We have a hard working cab driver, Krishna, who is duped of his hard earned money by his cunning boss. In rather hilarious fit of drunken rage he kidnaps the boss's daughter Nandeswari aka Nandu, who by the way is only too happy. Why? Because she doesn't like the guy her dad was getting her married to. So when Kirshna realizes his folly the morning and decides to take her back to her father she blackmails him into making a ransom call to her father. The plot takes the perfunctory unexpected twists designed to be funny.
It turns out our man has a past which catches up to him. That's revealed in the flashback after the statutory interval bang. It turns out Krishha has an overbearingly loving and goofy brother Jagapathy Babu, who continues their family business of kidnapping. It's a free for all from then on.
The problem with the movie is that the gags just don't come off. Despite the over the top histrionics that Jagapathy Babu brings to his character, it all just looks too forced. Same is the case with Tanikella Bharani who flaunts a very forced Tamil accent. The comedy track involving Thagubothu Ramesh is funny in parts but largely on the expected lines. He's always playing the same drunkard act isn't he?

As for the lead pair, Regina might just have outshone Sundeep with her screen presence. While Sundeep tries hard, he still has some way to go with his comedy and acting in general. Well the music seems to have been inspired by hit numbers from all over and gives you that feeling of dejavu all through. The cinematography is decent though.

NASA Builds worlds First Flying Observatory

NASA Builds worlds First Flying Observatory

NASA has fitted a 17-tonne telescope with an effective diameter of eight feet on a modified Boeing 747 jetliner that the US space agency is using as a flying observatory to study stars.
The infrared telescope called “Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy” (SOFIA) is mounted behind a sliding door that reveals it to the skies.
The jet can stay airborne for over 12 hours and its range is up to 6,625 nautical miles (7,624 miles).
According to NASA, “The data provided by SOFIA cannot be obtained by any other astronomical facility on the ground or in space.”
SOFIA is mobile, so it can better spot transient space events like supernovae and comets.
The telescope, built with the help from German Aerospace Centre (DLR), can easily be repaired or reprogrammed when necessary.
NASA plans SOFIA — now in Germany for its last extensive maintenance and refitting leg — to launch in 2015 which will keep flying for another 20 years, wired.com reported.

Federer Forces Deciding set In Wimbledon Final

Federer Forces Deciding set In Wimbledon Final

LONDON (AP) — Roger Federer won the last five games of the fourth set and saved a match point to take it 7-5 and force a deciding set in his Wimbledon men's singles final with Novak Djokovic on Sunday.
Federer won the opening set 7-6 (7) but Djokovic came back to win the next two 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Federer trailed 5-2 in the fourth set which featured five breaks of serve.
Djokovic thought he had won the match at 30-40 in the 10th game in the fourth set, but Federer challenged the call and the ball that was initially ruled out was on the line.
Federer went on to hold his serve to keep him in the match.
There has been only one service break through the first three sets — by Djokovic in the second set, only the second time Federer has had his service broken this tournament.
Both players were serving strongly and there were very few unforced errors in the high-quality match.
A victory by Djokovic would return him to the No. 1 ranking for the first time since September of last year, taking over from Rafael Nadal. Djokovic first rose to No. 1 when he won his only Wimbledon title in 2011, although he was already guaranteed of securing the top ranking even before beating Nadal in that final.
It was only the second time Federer and Djokovic have met in a Grand Slam final — Federer won in straight sets at the 2007 U.S. Open.
Djokovic fell awkwardly in the first game of the second set and called for a trainer immediately after he broke Federer's serve to take a 2-1 lead. The trainer worked on Djokovic's left ankle.
Djokovic again called for the trainer after the third game of the final set to have his right calf worked on.
The Serbian player consolidated the only break after taking a 40-love lead that eventually went to deuce three times. Djokovic faced a break point — his first of the match — while serving for the second set but clinched it with an overhead smash.
Federer led 3-0 in the first-set tiebreaker but later had three unforced backhand errors to let Djokovic back into the decider. An ace and service winner later helped create set point, when Djokovic hit a backhand into the net.
Djokovic started serving strongly, losing only two points in his first four service games, and one of those came on a double-fault.
Watching Sunday's final from the Royal Box were Prince William and his wife Kate, David Beckham and actors Bradley Cooper, Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Hemsworth.

Among the 21 on board were 10 soldiers, eight parachutists and three helicopter crew members.
One report in the local media said over a dozen people had been killed, but Tuan did not confirm this.
The helicopter exploded causing a fire which made it difficult for rescue workers to access the area, Nguyen Manh Hong, deputy chairman of the district said.
One witness told newspaper Tuoi Tre she saw the helicopter flying overhead, apparently in trouble, before it crashed and exploded.

A DDLJ Twist In Bollywood

A DDLJ Twist In  Bollywood

The press conference of the Varun Dhawan-Alia Bhatt starrer, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya was different — with balloons, and the lead actors shaking a leg. Alia sang a few lines from a song from the movie.
Varun plays Humpty Sharma, a happy-go-lucky Punjabi says: “This is our tribute to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. It a new version of the classic. The youth today react to authority differently than they did 20 years ago. My character has a touch of the boy-next-door. He is a regular guy you see in every colony — a college-going kid who knows how to enjoy life and finds happiness with his friends and loved ones.”
Talking about her character, Alia says, “This movie is a romance. It is not a romantic comedy. My character is a Punjabi girl, full of life and not afraid to take decisions. She is also moody. The character is similar to the person I am in real life. I had a lot of fun working in this movie.”
Varun chips in, “I did some research. I was born and grew up in Mumbai and did not have much of an idea about the mannerisms of Punjabi youngster. I went to Delhi and spent time at the university to understand my character.”
Alia adds, “Sometimes during the shoot, we would find it difficult to get out of our characters. Our language and the tone of our voices would also change. The workshops conducted by the director also helped in this.” Alia enjoyed singing the songs for the movie and says. “It is amazing that these songs have become so popular across the country including Punjab.”
Varun, who is working on a movie by Sriram Raghavan, says: “The movie is different from what I have done so far. I would like to do different roles and you may see me as an action hero soon.

FIFA World Cup 2014

Brazil Ready To cope with Neymars Absence

Willian and Bernard, the two leading contenders to replace Neymar in Brazil's World Cup semifinal clash against Germany insisted on Sunday that the team can still win the competition without their star player.
"Neymar sets the standard for us. He is capable of deciding any game, so playing without him will be difficult," said Chelsea midfielder Willian. "We know the quality that we have. We are all very sad at losing him but we are now even stronger after what happened and we can continue to pursue our dream."
Neymar's tournament ended in tears on Friday when he suffered a fractured vertebrae in his back after a crunching challenge from Juan Zuniga in the 2-1 quarterfinal win against Colombia.
Willian, who has made all three of his appearances at this World Cup from the bench, picked up a knock in training on Saturday in a clash with Hernanes, but said that it will not prevent him from being ready against Germany.
However, he warned that fans should not expect him to act as a direct replacement for the Barcelona star.
"You can't compare Neymar with any other player. He has so much quality," he said. "I have a different style even if we have some similarities, like my pace. Neymar is a forward, while I am more of a midfielder, someone who creates chances for others."
Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari could opt to hand a first start in the competition to diminutive Shakhtar Donetsk winger Bernard.
"We were all very sad at the situation and also because Neymar was very sad. Of course the whole group has felt his loss," said the 21-year-old. "He is a big loss not just as a player but also as a person. He is always smiling and saying positive things."
The introducton of Willian or Bernard could see Oscar moving into a central role behind striker Fred, but Scolari has several options.
He could play with three central midfielders, maintaining Paulinho in the side while also welcoming back Luiz Gustavo after suspension.
'Special moment'
"All of those who are here have ability and are capable of coming in and doing a good job," added Bernard, who nevertheless has extra incentive to win a start.
He hails from Belo Horizonte, where Tuesday's match will be played, and made his name at local club Atletico Mineiro, playing alongside Ronaldinho in the side that won the Copa Libertadores last year.
Bernard had a positive impact when he replaced Hulk in the second half of last year's 2-1 Confederations Cup semifinal win against Uruguay.
"It is a World Cup semi-final, a special moment," Bernard said. "But if I am not chosen we will have to agree with the coach."
Brazil have played six games without Neymar since 2010, winning five. Their solitary defeat was a 1-0 friendly loss away to France. The victories came against lesser opposition in Iran, Ukraine, Gabon, Egypt and Denmark.
At times during the World Cup, the hosts have appeared to be too dependent on the genius of Neymar, who scored four goals to help them through the group stage.
However, Brazilians can draw hope from the events of the 1962 World Cup, when their star man Pele withdrew injured in the group stage.
Amarildo took his place and scored three goals to help the Selecao retain the title, including one in the final victory against Czechoslovakia.
"Nobody ever expected that we could come to a situation like this, without Neymar," said Bernard. "But there is still time. We will be able to adjust and find the best way to cope with the situation," he added.

Game For A catch

                    Game For A catch

The air is fresh, the soil is damp and there’s water everywhere. I’m in a picturesque locale, just 30km away from the bustle of the city. It’s 7 a.m. They’re alive and kicking, ready for breakfast. Down goes the float, there’s a pull on the line and the rod bends. It’s a fish at the other end, and everyone is excited. I’m with a group of high-spirited anglers that ritually frequents the East Coast Road, not for the seafood and beer at Mahabalipuram, but for a day of action-packed sport-fishing. And they are giving me an insight into the Real McCoy fisherman tales!

Anglers in Chennai have visited Muttukaadu and the surrounding areas on the East Coast Road for backwater fishing and sea fishing for nearly 40 years. “It’s an activity that gives peace of mind and provides wholesome entertainment. We use a catch-and-release mechanism, and don’t fish for food,” says Gangadharan, a septuagenarian. “However, in Chennai, this concept of sport-fishing is still primitive. Sadly, people kill even the smallest of fish to eat, which prevent the fish from growing,” he adds.

For many years, until early 2000, Chennai Port was the centre of fishing activity. The British ‘way’ of life resulted in a paradise for anglers, with a nominal fee and an angling license. However, this changed because of an increase in license fees and a subsequent ban on fishing permits. The enthusiasm towards the sport was re-kindled when the State Government proposed the idea of restoring the Chetpet Lake for sport-fishing last year. But the promises made have not been fulfilled, and anglers hope that the fishing scene recovers from dire straits. “It will be a progressive step towards developing the water bodies in the city to support sport fishing and outdoor entertainment,” says Gangadharan.

Still, there are many anglers in Chennai who reminisce about those ‘good old fishing days’. “It’s been a while since I last went fishing. We used to head to Ennore Port and North Madras then, or fish out at sea. I’ve caught barracudas and giant trevally,” says Cary Andrews, ex-VJ for Channel V. “Now the Government doesn’t allow private boats out that far,” he adds.

Looking at it from another dimension, the Chennai waters today no longer support the plethora of fish that they once boasted. “The constant coastal development from Pulicat to Marakkanam has destroyed the primary species of fish, and is driving them to extinction,” says Joe Lobo, a restaurant owner. He adds, “I’ve been fishing since I was a boy, and can see a constant reduction in the quantity of fish over the past 20 years.” Joe, like all other anglers, respects the art not only as a sport but also from the point of view of conservation, which go hand in hand.

However, the angler’s spirit never dies, and he never lets the line get slack. Michael Gagarin, 25, a young lover of the sport says, “It gives me an adrenaline rush. Spinning on the coast requires a lot of stamina and energy. It’s an exciting sport and we still catch some big fish.”

Sport-fishing in Chennai hasn’t still become a thing of the past as the anglers strive to keep their rods high.

Japan scientists Find Ageing cure For Flowers

Japan scientists Find Ageing cure For Flowers

TOKYO: Japanese scientists say they have found a way to slow down the ageing process in flowers by up to a half, meaning bouquets could remain fresh for much longer.
Researchers at the National Agriculture and Food Research Organisation in Tsukuba, east of Tokyo, said they had found the gene believed to be responsible for the short shelf-life of flowers in one Japanese variety of morning glory.

"Morning glory" is the popular name for a hundreds of species of flowering plants whose short-lived blooms usually unfold early in the day and are gone by nightfall.
By suppressing the gene -- named "EPHEMERAL1" -- the lifespan of each flower was almost doubled, said Kenichi Shibuya, one of the lead researchers in a study carried out jointly with Kagoshima University in southern Japan.

"Unmodified flowers started withering 13 hours after they opened, but flowers that had been genetically modified stayed open for 24 hours," he said.
This means the plant has fresh purple flowers alongside the paler blooms from the previous day, he said.
"We have concluded that the gene is linked to petal ageing," Shibuya told AFP by telephone on Thursday.

The finding could lead to developing methods to extend the life of cut flowers, he added.
"It would be unrealistic to modify genes of all kinds of flowers but we can look for other ways to suppress the (target) gene... such as making cut flowers absorb a solution that prevents the gene from becoming active," Shibuya said.

For some flowers, such as carnations, florists currently use chemicals to inhibit ethylene, a plant hormone which sometimes causes blooms to ripen.
But ethylene is not involved in the ageing of some popular flowers, such as lilies, tulips and irises.

A gene similar to EPHEMERAL1 could be responsible for petal ageing in these plants, Shibuya said, meaning the ability to suppress it would extend their life.

Solidarity Run To boost cycling Expedition

Solidarity Run To boost cycling Expedition

Hyderabad Bicycling Club (HBC) organised a ‘Solidarity Cycle Run’ at Necklace Road on Sunday in support of a cycling expedition between Manali and Khardung La, being taken up by differently-abled cyclist Aditya Mehta.
The solidarity cycle run, which was flagged-off by IT and Panchayat Raj Minister K.T. Rama Rao, also had large number of cyclists from Hyderabad who wanted to encourage Aditya. According to HBC, the cyclist is setting out on the gruelling journey to raise awareness about challenges faced by the differently-abled and also motivate them to aim higher.
The ride between Manali and Khardung La is challenging, as it is one of the highest motorable roads in the world at 18,379 ft. above sea level. “Differently-abled athletes in India have tremendous potential and can bring laurels to the country if given the right support. To emphasise this, I have taken up this journey,” Aditya said. HBC chairman D.V. Manohar said that Aditya’s efforts should motivate more youth in Hyderabad and elsewhere to take up bicycling.

High vegetable pricesshock Madurai Residents

High vegetable pricesshock Madurai Residents

For many Madurai residents, vegetable shopping at the Central Vegetable Market near Mattuthavani on Sunday morning burnt a big hole in their pockets.
For the last one month, the prices of vegetables have been steadily rising. “Onions, potatoes and tomatoes are sold at Rs.30 a kg today,” said S. Shiva who owns a wholesale shop in the market. Selling at Rs.70 a kilo, beans proved to be one of the most expensive vegetables. Drumsticks are sold at Rs.65 a kg and ‘avarai’ (country beans) and beetroot at Rs.50.
“We are not expecting the rates of vegetables to come down anytime soon. There has been scanty rainfall everywhere and there haven’t been heavy arrivals,” said N. Eswaran, a vendor.
“Customers bargain hard but we are already not making much profit. People who used to buy in kilos buy only 250 grams to 300 grams of these vegetables,” he added.
Echoing his view, most vendors at the market also said that with the cost of transportation having gone up, they were hardly making money.
“It costs Rs.5 to transport one kilo. A train ticket to Tenkasi which used to cost us Rs.25 now costs Rs.35,” said T. Muthukumar.
G. Nagamani, a vendor who sells coriander, said they bought a kilo of the leaves at a whopping Rs.160. “Prices used to be so low that we used to give it for free in the past,” he said.
With vegetables such as radish, chow chow (chayote) and brinjal costing Rs.35 a kilo, customers have no choice but to go ahead and spend heavily on vegetables.
“We pack lunch for our children every day and they need some variety. With vegetables such as beans costing Rs.70 a kg, we have been forced to skip preparing extra meals such as evening snacks and tiffin,” said G. Balamurugan, a resident of Surya Nagar.
T. Bhuvaneshwari, a resident of Kadachanendhal, said the prices of vegetables were not the only ones to hurt, the prices of meat had also doubled. “While chicken cost Rs.170 a kilo, mutton costs Rs.500. Now, our household budget is in disarray,” she says.

TRS Against Special powers To Governor

TRS Against Special powers To Governor

The ruling TRS has decided to oppose a proposal of the Union Home Ministry to give special powers to the Governor in matters related to the functioning of the police in Hyderabad by amending business rules of the State government.
The Ministry had recently circulated the draft rules and sought views of the State government on empowering the Governor to act in matters of the police in Hyderabad such as transfers of officers and scrutiny of files of crime investigation.
Threat to ties with Centre

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao felt that the move was a direct intervention in the affairs of the State government and a threat to Centre-State relations. It should be opposed in the House, he told the MPs at their meeting on the eve of the commencement of the budget session of Parliament from Monday.
Sources said Mr. Rao explained that the Centre’s move could become a precedent and extended to other States if not opposed. Maintenance of law and order was a State subject over which the Governors should not have a role. He asked the TRS MPs to take the support of other regional parties when they stage a protest on the floor of the House.

Mr. Rao also wanted the MPs to protest against the amendment Bill to the AP Reorganisation Act which will be moved by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh seeking transfer of seven mandals of Khammam to Andhra Pradesh. They should mount pressure on the Centre for more projects to the State in the railway budget.

Bogus ration cards

Addressing the newly elected zilla parishad and mandal parishad presidents earlier, Mr. Rao referred to his plan to weed out white ration cards as they were far in excess of the households in the State. He said there were only 84 lakh families but 90 lakh white cards and 15 lakh pink cards were in circulation. There were also irregularities in the weaker sections housing as all the families in some villages were sanctioned new houses. It meant that people who owned houses already got new units. They took money from the government but did not construct houses.

He asked the leaders not to show favouritism in extending government benefits and warned of action if it came to his notice. They should prepare an indent of requirements in every village and focus on development. It was only to ensure development of the State that he assumed Chief Ministership.
