Total Solar Eclipse Today July 11, 2010 – There will be two important events today, July 11, 2010. Aside from the FIFA World Cup 2010 finals in South Africa where Spain and Netherlands will battle for the championship, there is a scheduled total solar eclipse.

Solar eclipse happen when Moon passes between Earth and Sun thereby obscuring Earth’s view of the Sun. Since today’s scheduled eclipse is a total solar eclipse, there will be some parts of the Earth where day will be turned into darkness as the Moon’s diameter would be larger than that of the Sun thereby blocking all the sunlight.

According to NASA, the solar eclipse will be visible for most part of the southern Pacific Ocean since it will traverse Earth’s Southern Hemisphere. It will also be seen in small islands such as Tuamotu in French Polynesia, Mangaia in the Cook Islands, Tahiti, Easter Island (Isla de Pascua) and will end after reaching southern Chile and Argentina in South America.

For the time and path of the eclipse, it will begin at 2:15 p.m. Eastern Time north of New Zealand near the Cook Islands. It will then continue to pass Easter Island and will end in Chile at the southernmost tip of South America at 4:52 p.m. Eastern Time. In addition, this solar eclipse will last the longest for 5 minutes 20 seconds over open Pacific waters at 3:33 p.m. Eastern Time.
