INDIA'S newly elected parliament started is first session on Monday. On monday the parliament is all set to elect the country's first ever woman speaker Meira Kumar.
PM Manmohan Singh, said he hoped that this parliament would function in a proper way without any disruption, protests and adjourments.
Meira Kumar entered electoral politics in 1985 and was elected from Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh defeating Ram Vilas Paswan and Mayawati, two powerful dalit leaders of today. She was a member of the eleventh and twelfth Lok Sabha's from Karol Bagh in Delhi. She lost her seat in the BJP wave of 1999, but was able to get reelected with a record majority from her father's former constituency of Sasaram in Bihar in 2004 and again in 2009.
She was inducted into the Manmohan Singh cabinet, as Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment in 2004 and is presently the Union Minister for Water Resources. She is the presumptive nominee of the ruling UPA government for the position of Speaker of the Lok Sabha. If elected, she will be first women speaker of the Indian Parliament.
